it appears Op is likely in an older home and using new guidelines for newer style homes is not the correct thing to do
I would start with the simple
1. If you know someone who will loan you a 12-18000 btu window unit- I would add that in my house to see how much difference it makes( you can rent them) but heck most South Louisiana folks have a "hurricane window unit". IF this solves your problem- your unit is undersized.
2. I would create a continuous soffit vent( if your house is older they are likely plugged with insulation, dirt, debris rust etc- - a jigsaw makes quick work and the vents are easy to install
