Question about rental car damage waiver

I have coverage through both my credit card and regular car insurance, but I'm wondering if something happens if I'd still have to go through the normal process and have it ultimately raise my own car insurance.
Damage waiver for rental car is $20/day but I've always understood it to mean that you can basically drive it off a cliff and there's no questions asked.
Is getting the damage waiver worth it for peace of mind and to avoid any potential headaches?
Obviously I'm not planning on getting a wreck, but was wondering just in case.

Check with your credit card. A lot of times, the credit card includes some sort of rental car damage coverage.
ETA: Didn't read your whole post. Looks like you already know about this.

If you are at fault I'm sure your insurance will go up no matter if you buy the rental insurance or not. The question always comes up on loss of use that the rental car company will be looking to recover. I use my personal insurance and credit card insurance then roll the dice.

anytime we rent a van to transport millwrights to an from the parking lot, we buy the damage waiver because the van either gets filthy on the inside or it gets backed into onsite. A couple of weeks ago, we had a van rented and a D9 backed into it caving in the front. Enterprise towed the damaged one away and brought us out another one.

Thanks yall. I am going to call my insurance company and credit card company today and see if what they offer is comparable to the DW from Enterprise. Wanted to see what some other folks usually do.
Usually I travel for work and we're required to decline it. This is the first time I've rented one for personal use.

Its a rip off. Think about it...$600 rate if you factor it monthly. The only thing you'd be at risk for without the damage waiver is that if something happens to the rental while you're in possession of it, you will have to cover whatever deductible is on your regular car insurance. That's not even taking into account whatever coverage your credit card offers.

Just don't get a traffic ticket or be the at-fault driver in a wreck. Anything else is considered a "non-chargeable incident" (not at-fault accident or comp claim) and can't be used by car insurers to raise rates on an individual policy or driver.
