Why didn't these morons kill it? Or send it to a habitat where it belongs?

Read the article posted on the previous page.

They implant a tracker in several large male pythons and track them during mating season to lead them to the females. They capture and kill the females and destroy their eggs. No females means they’ll be able to hopefully decimate the population.

They are really pretty docile. I’ve had around 140 cottonmouth encounters in the past couple years, and today caught my 42nd one in that time frame. The majority just try to flee, even when I’m actively trying to catch them. Around 1/3 of them will put on a the defensive “gaping” display (which gives them their cottonmouth name), but only a small percentage of those strike even when provoked. I’ve had them literally swim right by me - even over my boot - and ignore the fact that I was even there. They are very chill snakes.

The one I caight today was ready to shed, so it was practically blind. Most snakes are very defensive when they are in shed due to this. This one was sitting on a branch. I got my snake hook under it and lifted it off, but it sropped into the water. I was able to get it on my hook again and put it on land. The whole time it kept trying to flee, which made it hard to get photos and video. Not once did it strike. Eventually I was able to catch it, get a photo, and release it.

A study of cottonmouths by Gibbons and Dorcas (2002) revealed that cottonmouths rarely bite in self-defense. None of cottonmouths tested offered to bite when researchers stood beside them and less than 20% tried to bite when physically stepped on. Furthermore, even when picked up by the researchers, only 36% of individuals attempted to bite

Cottonmouths are very misunderstood snakes.

Not to mention Cottonmouths are definitely the dicks of the snake world. An aside about cottonmouths: I once treated a dog honestly 8x for snake bites over two years. After the third time, I asked the owners what the hell was going on, and apparently this pitbull absolutely hated the snakes and would hunt them as her owners lived beside wetlands. First time antivenin saved her life, the second she nearly died from a reaction to the antivenin, and by the 5th time, she barely swelled up at all and one could probably use her blood as antivenin therapy. i have sinced moved away, but I imagine that dog is still happily hunting the snakes, especially now that she is damn near immune to them.

My grandparents used to have a schnauzer like this. She almost died the first time she was bit, 2nd and 3rd were pretty bad. They know that she was bitten at least 3 more times and all she did was walk with a slight limp for a day or so. There’s a guy that has been experimenting on himself with snake bites for decades and he’s built up a frickton of immunity. Some scientist found out about him and they’re trying to use his blood to develop an all encompassing anti venom for humans. The guy is absolutely nuts. He let a cobra bite him 4 times in the span of an hour or so. His name is Tim Friede. Here’s an article detailing what they’re doing.

Why are they tracking pythons and just not killing them?
