Her mistake was getting mixed up with this a-hole and not going to the police IMMEDIATELY when he told her he killed two people. She thought they were just robbing people- not good, but not quite double murder.

There is a competency restoration process that a judge can order someone to go through. Not sure how often it is used, I was trained in it about 5 years ago and never have been asked to work with anyone.

Same thing happened with a guy that shot one of my wife's relatives. Apparently being an animal with no regard for human life is a mental condition that gets you off the hook for murder.
