My old service department was run by marine vet. hardass but really good at his job. It's a tough balance between letting your techs have a good/work life and getting shite done. Especially when you start dealing with cranes, it is impossible to find enough good hands.

What's nuts is the worst offenders of being too hard on their employees was almost always parts guys. I'll never understand why but my old parts manager was a slave driver

Guess that's true everywhere because from what I've seen it's true at many dealerships. Most service mangers are tough but fair. Most parts managers though are power hunger assholes who act like some sort of petty dictator over a banana republic. No idea why it's that way. It just is.

My boss is the worst offender. He has 4 kids and a wife and they get him sick and he carries it to the office and spreads it to us!

Since you can't control others, you can control how often you wash your hands with soap and water. Hand sanitizer is not the same thing.

Spot on, though given the choice I'll take part over service any day of the week. My short stint in service depressing and made a more miserable a-hole. You learn a lot quickly but it's just tough. It's why every service manager is overweight, excess tobacco use and high blood pressure. It's just non-stop "get this shite done yesterday" plus controlling 10-30 techs/dudes/drunks

In my short few years in this business I have been around the block both branch and corporate levels. Both have their +/- but branch life, while longer days, is much more fun.
