The 6 pm flight Cuse to Nashville is their flight. I'm just checking Southwest.com from time to time.

lol Those kids are going to get another day out of school. Thank goodness it's a small school and they know their teachers well.

Thanks for the airport info ... I just book a ticket, fly, arrive, do my thing, come home. Never give logistics a thought. Sad isn't it?

The snow wasn't as bad as it is today. Worst day in D.C. until 9/11/01.

Agreed but IIRC there were also icing problems that day. That pilot made several errors which led to the crash. I believe there was also a subway derailment in a tunnel that day on the Metro.

I lived in Oakton at the time as well. Townhouses right across from the elementary school on Miller Road.

I remember that and watching it on tv. I was in either 7th or 8 grade. Was a sad day indeed. Didn't they make a movie from that?

We have a friend that is a pilot for United ... asked him about the deicing stuff. He said that THAT crash is what lead to a horn (of some type) being installed to indicate something or other with the deicing system/procedure.

This is what he told me: "The crew of that aircraft didn't put flaps in take off position after de-icing. Because of that a horn is installed in all passenger jets that warn if the take off configuration isn't correct."

He continued with "Because you have to leave the flaps up to taxi in ice and snow and we normally extend them after starting the engines. It may not have been on the checklist back then. Won't happen now. Checklist after check list is in place along with safeguards from the airplane."

The cockpit voice box recorded him laughing about other aircraft getting de-iced. Fatal mistake.

Yeah, a couple of people were killed on the Metro that day.

I lived off Blake Lane at the time.

yeah, the official report is that the pilot made multiple errors including using reverse thrust accidentally at takeoff. Watching those rescue attempts in that icy water...shudder.

Accuweather has a link to a story about a man who had a heart attach while shoveling snow in Maryland. IDK how much snow that they've gotten but is it worth it to try to shovel if it's still falling? (don't know that it was but again, I know nothing about snow)

It's amazing how the area has built up over the years I've been here. Traffic is just miserable.

In a storm like this if you're using a shovel it's best to shovel every few hours. Much easier to move 8" of snow than 2' plus.

It is. We're in western Fairfax County now and the traffic isn't too terrible. Most of my work is in Ashburn in the data centers so I'm generally against traffic. One of my guys drives in from near Front Royal. I couldn't deal with that.

I go out to court there from time to time. It's a nice ride from time to time. But I couldn't do that commute on a daily basis.

Oil - that's where you're fing up.

Oil tastes like shite and takes forever.

Use butter instead of oil.

It tastes much better and I can make a butter roux in 15 min or less.

Which is what I've pretty much said all along. And someone, not you, insisted that the storm was no big deal for the airports and that flights would resume on Sunday by noon.
