If you are staying in your current job I would expect a 10-15% raise. Switching jobs should be 20-25%.

I should qualify that. Outside of working with whatever state you're in's DOT, expect nothing. In my experience working most fedgov, transit, railroad, and infrastructure jobs don't require it because they consult out their work to PE's to stamp.

Maybe it's because we live in different parts of the country, but every public job that I work with govt engineers on none have PE's. FTR, I have done work with Dept of Corrections, HHS, Corps of Engineers, MTA, Port Authority of NY/NJ, Homeland Security, NYPD, and a boat load of other municipalities. They don't stamp their own work- they just hire consultants to stamp it for them, or do only very preliminary engineering work.

The only qualification to that is DOT, which usually stamps their own work.

That's the case with most of the govt work I see as well, but workers still get a bump for the PE. I know a guy that runs a bridge section that for whatever reason hasn't ever passed the PE. he's making 70 cents on the dollar compared to people that have been there just as long as he has and have just as much responsibility. If he'd get his PE he'd get a very significant bump.

A lot of other govt jobs down here basically won't even hire you if you aren't on the path to get your PE, even if you aren't going to be stamping stuff.

See look at that- we agree again, on a mathish related topic. It might be time to pull out another 288 thread and watch the OT burn down.
