You told your son, who is in his 20's, he can't play pokemon?
No

He and I discussed what the app was, on the surface and what could be going on beneath the surface.
He still comes to me with questions on computer builds and which OS/software configurations to run with, so maybe my opinions are still valid to him

In the end, we just both agreed with each other:
idea yes, application no

I'm a bit confused by how it works. Who decides where the characters are? If they are in private businesses, does the business have to okay it before the character is placed there?

Its not like they're actually putting something in there.

Its on a random place on a map, whether that is indoors or outdoors doesn't really matter.

At least from what I understand.

Or think about the all coin collecting of a Sonic the Hedgehog version

Sonic would be rings, not coins.

Right, but I would imagine people would still not be happy to know that a game has placed a virtual character in their business. I know I wouldn't want a character randomly placed in my backyard and have kids trying to catch it. I was just wondering if there is any attempt to make sure the characters are placed in public areas rather than on private property.

I was actually thinking the opposite. Think of how much money is made in advertizing. What if I gave you the opportunity to buy a Gym that would guarantee you but just eyeballs but foot traffic and social media mentions in a highly lucrative 20-30 year old demographic? You don't think a business would love or even would pay to have the chance of having one of these places pop up on their doorstep?

I'm sure it's great for some businesses (restaurants, stores, etc.). But, it could be a pain in the arse for other businesses. You think one shell square wants people running around trying to catch Pokemon? How about hotels? Pretty much any business that isn't going to profit from these people.

I've seen a shitload of people playing the game in NYC. It's pretty easy to tell because there will be 5-10 people all standing/walking in the same 50 meter diameter area looking at their phones.

I saw a chubby, pasty girl sprint up and down a street while stopping to look at her phone, presumably to catch Pokemon.

I'm glad she was running, but idk, it seemed kind of pathetic too.

Lulz this is so bad. So we just need to put fake Pokemon's on all the treadmills these days? People standing in the streets looking for Pokemon's?

Damn this place got weird as hell.

dammit, I hadn't thought about this. I have a pretty big backyard. May need to download the app just to make sure I don't have to post any signs on my fence.
