This is not true at all. Maybe 10 years ago but today its almost a negative. The big companies are pushing against this at the corporate level.

Only way it helps is if you land an interview and your contact is friends with someone on the interview panel. This still only guarantees 1 of the 5 interviewers will grade you well.

And it's still up to your resume and testing skills just to get you to the interview process.

Meh, somewhat true. Felons can get TWIC cards and I work with numerous that have multiple DWIs before and after hiring in.

Pretty sure brcc offers the fast track program for people with at least an associates degree. It's a 16 week program that is M-F 8-5 but when you finish you have the same ptec associate degree as the people who go through the full program. If I were you I'd bite the bullett and grind through the 16 weeks.

The hiring process is pretty tough. In most cases it will last 6+ months and cosist of multiple test and interviews.

I'm currently moving from a small plant to one of the giants. The hiring process was a year long with 2 test, 2 panel interviews (5 interviewers) and a physical fitness test.

Also if you have anything on your record other than minor traffic incidents you will have zero chance of getting hired.

These jobs are 100% worth all the bs you have to go through to get hired. You'll start out around 60-80k with and after 2 or 3 years you'll be between 100-150k. Im in my early twenties and my company matches over 10% 401k with a pension, a yearly bonus and stock options so when I reach retirement age I'll be stacked.

I'll be glad to answer any questions you have. I was in the same spot as you a couple years ago and had some people here that helped me out.

Everyone I know (including myself) in the industry considers themselves lucky just to get hired on, regardless of their education/experience.

If you think it's easy to get hired on go talk to 80% ptec grads in the last 2 years that are working for turner or total safety and still having trouble landing an operator job.

Out of my graduating class 7 of us are working as operators and I graduated over a year ago.

Plants will take ptec over any bachelors degree that isn't some type of science or engineering. But if you have a bachelors and ptec you will be looked at as superior than ptec alone.

The interesting trend are plants/refineries moving away from strict Ptech only hiring.

I think they found it polluting the culture that had proven successful.

The last pool of ops that came in with Ptech degrees actually were capped. "We have enough candidates with Ptech degrees, let's look at ones that don't"

The HR people I've talked to say the same but mostly refer to the guys that worked at Pizza Hut or Target and walk into a plant a month after graduating ptec just to fail.

This is the companies fault imho. The interviews need to be changed. Anyone can make up BS answers to the "tell me about a time" questions when they know word for word what will be asked before stepping foot in the interviewers office.

There's plenty of young people (like myself) that have been in an industrial environment well before even starting ptec and know how to work and carry themselves professionally.

Interesting trend no doubt. Same thing happening where I work. We're a smaller plant, but they got on a ptech hire kick for a year or two. What I've noticed is that the young ptech guys come in thinking they've got shite figured out, but we end up having to not only teach them the process, we also have to teach them how to work. The ex mechanics, firefighters, scaffold builders, maintenance hands, etc. come in ready to work and end up leaving the ptech clowns in the dust.

That being said, I'm sure plenty of plants still value the ptech degree.

Couldn't agree more. So many people I know that would make great operators can't get hired and I see so many idiots getting hired above them.

Also I was in maintenance offshore from the day I graduated high school. After 2 years said screw it and started ptec.

A lot of Ptechs think it is a real degree. Like they earned something instead of seeing it as companies just wanting an "educated" workforce.
