During World War II, when tensions were high following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces, there was a widespread atmosphere of suspicion and fear of anyone of Asian descent in the United States. This led to unfortunate incidents of racial profiling and discrimination, affecting not only Japanese Americans but also Chinese Americans.

Ruth Lee, the hostess at a Chinese restaurant in the photo, took a proactive step to avoid being mistaken for Japanese and potentially facing discrimination. She brought a Chinese flag with her to the beach on her day off, displaying it prominently while sunbathing. By doing so, she hoped to make it clear that she was of Chinese descent, not Japanese, and avoid any hostile reactions or accusations.
