He was USAAF.... radio and radar operator who helped damaged and lost planes find a base. 13th AF

Jesse Owens salutes the flag on receiving a gold medal at the 1936 Olympics. Thirty-two years later at the 1968 Mexico City games, after winning and placing in the 200m John Carlos and Tommy Smith raised their fists in protest over civil rights issues. The U.S. Olympic Committee promptly removed them from the team. Many of the athletes wanted to walk off the team in support. The person who convinced them to stay and compete - Jesse Owens.
