R.I.P. Margaret Hamilton (1936–2026): She led the MIT team that built the on-board flight software for the Apollo missions, and she coined the term “software engineering.” When the computer overloaded minutes before the Apollo 11 landing, her team’s software kept it running and the landing went ahead. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.



Don't be fooled by the distortiions of the lighting in the photo. She was actually black.
