Maybe they wanted a small, sporty car that was nicer than a Subaru Impreza. Maybe they like BMW for what it is. Maybe they didn't want a Honda Accord.
I don't understand why this bothers you so much.
Also, I guarantee you own/wear/use something that others could look at and say the same things about you.
And no, I don't drive a 3 series.

why are you being so judgmental about people that drive these cars? Are you unsuccessful and are trying to justify your unsuccessfulness by making fun of them?
I mean,is this a play on frat guys? How about women that drive them.
C'mon man.

<-- Drives an e46 3-series and doesn't give a frick what you think. I've also owned an e30 and e36. Good cars. I'm comfortable with my dick size and don't need a vehicle to make up for lack of length/girth. For my next car I'm leaning towards an e90 xi wagon.

It's their money, they can do as they please, while on my end, 0 fricks will be given.

first thing that comes to your mind is a 3-series?
most people would be impressed, that's why they do it.

Like what? The 3 series IMO is a better car than the Audi or Mercedes counterparts. The Lexus IS is a joke compared to it. About the only real competition to it IMO is the Infiniti G (or whatever they're called now). But the 3 series offers so many different configurations to suit exactly what you need out of it, and has always been the innovator of the class.
So what are the better cars?

You have thought about this way too much.
They are decent cars with an excellent warranty.

Why would I be insecure? I don't drive a 3-series. It is people who drive the 3-series who seem like they have something to prove - maybe that they are slightly successful in life? All I am saying is there are better cars to drive if they took the time to do some research instead of thinking like sheep.
Dickbreath.
ETA: I'm going to guess you're in your early 20s and that's why you still give a frick about what people drive.

It's a good car for a young professional starting out but if you are over the age of 30 there is no reason to drive one. By then you should either have a bigger sedan if you want it to look professional or be at a point where you don't care what others think and get a car that is fun. My current car I got only because it is fast as hell and makes driving fun every day, I could not care less if people think it is appropriate for me!

3 series tends to attract the 30k millionaire crowd more than most other cars. Lots of dude-bros driving around like they're fricking Gordon Gekko or something.

has something to do with it.

Impossible. Who like a car that's been named to Car and Driver's annual Ten Best list 22 times?
