Its no dumber than going into debt for a diamond you can't afford either.
Its just a symbol of the marriage, and it, like any other ring, can be removed.

I worked with a lady in Honolulu who had one. They're still together after 21 years.
The couple were locals and already had 3 kids. When they turned to Christianity and announced to their kids they were getting married, the middle child went into tears begging them not to.
When the couple asked what the problem was, he explained that he feared they would get divorced.
