Most DIY I've seen don't turn out that well, but I'm sure there are some that could do a good job. I guess it depends on your expectations. I think it's really difficult to get the smooth gloss paint finish that professional cabinet makers do.

I am at work overseas and only have this one with me.
not that great a pic, taken during a refresh of my kitchen after painting the cabinets.

Try again pls.
To the person that said work around the color they currently are- they clash with the new floors. And I don't think anyone really likes honey oak. Maybe in higher quality cabinets, but in these... We didn't even like them when we bought 10 years ago, but it wasn't bad with the old floor. Now with two diff wood grains, they look really early 2000s.

If you have raised panel doors, you might look into having new doors made to flat panel doors out of plywood. You can then resell you old doors.

It's a good weekend project and at your experience level, you'll be happy but it won't be perfect.
I did mine from stained plywood to green paint. Bought a Black & Decker paint sprayer.
Removed all hardware. Took doors & drawers outside. Sprayed with Kilz. Sprayed with paint. Turned out good except the couple of spots the sprayer spit instead of sprayed.
Touched up the edges with a brush.
Kilzed & painted the inside with a brush and small roller. Did not worry about the inside of the cabinets.
ETA: The green color is ugly as crap but I'm not going through the effort redo.
