Going to 5 min oil was your first mistake. Sue their asses and force them to settle, its 5 min oil for Christ sake.

This maybe a dumb question, can I sue them simply for not installing the air filter?

Prob not. Lol. But if you have proof your car was affected wo an air filter I don't see why not. They'll prob offer you a few free oil changed. You should def contact their corporate headquarters and tell them what happened.

I'm no lawyer, but I think you only sue when someone has cause you financial damage....then you sue to recoup your losses. so, if your engine craps out next week and they won't reimburse you, then you may have a case. I wouldn't expect any lasting issues based on what you have posted here, though.

I'm going to contact the company Monday. The car runs fine, but I would feel better if I could get a couple oil changes the next 500 - 1000 miles to flush any trash out.

agreed...that is probably not a bad idea, if you can manage it.

Making fun of someone for going to a 5 Minute Oil Change or a Jiffy Lube is plain stupid.
No it's not

If it's dumb to go to oil change places and dealerships, where should those of us who don't DIY take our cars? I'm legit asking. I don't want to mess up my car.

Went to 5 hour oil change out of convenience

5 hours doesn't sound very convenient to me.

Not sure how dirt in the intake air could find its way into the oil. It is a sealed combustion chamber and the air and oil never really interact. At worst a tiny amount may have found its way through the piston rings.

Biggest concern is damage to the upper cylinder walls. Have a mechanic with a borescope look for scoring on the cylinder walls through the spark plug hole. If there is damage it can be recorded and shown to the oil change shop.

This.

Every time I change my air filter I notice sand. I don't live or drive near sand. But apparently it is out there and would go into the cylinders wouthout a filter. Air filters greatly improved engine longevity. As someone who puts 200k+ on cars, I'd be pissed. If you are going to trade it with 50k, I wouldn't worry too much.

Scouring of the cylinder walls. An oil analysis would show that. The valves can also get damaged or caked with shite (both ends). MAF sensor and throttle body should be inspected.

For everyone saying running it without a filter in a clean environment is fine, go outside and swipe your hand on the inside of your fenderwells and rub that on your face. Yes, it's better than riding off-road or through clay pasture, but all air has small particles floating around in it. My air filters have caught some big stuff that I definitely wouldn't want in my engine, along with a lot of fine clay particles.

OP, I'd bring it to an ASE certified mechanic, tell him what happened, and have him inspect everything. Pay him the usual $100/hr, and you'll at least have piece of mind
