Any thoughts on what this might be? It only happens in reverse.

Thanks in advance.

That might help. Also have a Tacoma. 2006 Tacoma Prerunner.

definitely U-joint then

seems to be a pretty common problem for Tacomas

Simple to fix (like a hefty dose of WD40) or does it require bringing it to the shop?

you have to remove the drivetrain, so if you are comfortable doing that, it is easy

I'll probably take mine to the shop soon, should only be about $100 as the part is pretty cheap

Not comfortable at all doing that. To the shop it goes.

Thanks Salmon.

100% buddy, I actually did a write up on tacomaworld a couple months back when I replaced mine.

It's not that hard took me 2-3 hours one afternoon and replaced two of them, just cause. Only my rear one was rusted out.

Here's a link to my write-up...

U-Joint Replacement

If it has zerk fittings on the joint, you might want to attack them with a grease gun and see if that helps.

Is it something that needs to be addressed immediately, or can it wait a while?

I've heard some people say they shite their driveshaft onto the road. Thinking about it though it sounds ridiculous. Because the reason its squeaking is because your needle bearings are rusted out inside the u-joint. I don't know how you could completely separate the drive shaft from the truck.

But anyways, I wouldn't wait too long to redo them.

Could it be the wear indicator on your brake pads? I'm not a car guy but I think this happened to me in the distant past.

I don't think. It only happens in reverse.

I can say with certainty it's your u-joint, that's exactly what mine did. Is it more like a rotational squeak, not like a screech?

What you can do is have someone back up your taco and kneel down on the side of the truck and listen for it. Mine came from the u-joint connecting the drive shaft to the differential in the back.

You've never seen someone break a u-joint causing the driveshaft to hit the ground? Once the needles become rusted it wears the part of the joint that goes into the cap due to an increase of friction. After a while it can weaken the u-joint causing it to break. That can happen, or it will wear the inside of the cap causing it to eventually shear. It's nasty business when that happens because it can frick up the holes the caps fit into on the drive shaft and yokes.

Guess its a good thing I didn't wait long to do mine.

This is what my rear u-joint looked like when I replaced it.

Most cars, this would be correct.
I Googled Tacoma squeak, and tons of U joint posts showed up.
It's a very common problem for those trucks.

I think if you just didn't go in reverse it would be fine.
