re: OT gym rats: working out in the AM vs. PM

I'll be completely honest, I never worked out in the morning. I had to take time out of the evening to work out, and sometimes missed when shite came up.
When I started waking up early, drinking a cup of coffee, and getting to the gym around 0530, I started feeling great, had great workouts, and was ready for the day. The one misconception I had was that id be tired throughout the day, and that is NOT the case.

There are benefits to both. It depends on what you are looking for.
AM - More energy during the day, and studies find you sleep easier
PM - More prone to muscle gain, and studies find you de-stress more.
Personally - I am a 2 state, all natural, bodybuilding champion, and a trainer of 10 years. I also have 3 runner's up bodybuilding finishes. I prefer the PM. I like to have at least 4 meals in me before I lift heavy. I also do cardio at 6 am on an empty stomach to start my metabolism.

Studies show that the more meals you intake before a workout, the more your muscular system is relaxed and prepared to take a the heavy strain of lifting.
But again, they are just studies. Everybody's body works different.

This is off topic, but, if I'm trying to lose weight, should I do the machines with lighter weight?

Yes. Higher reps at lower weights burn more fat. Just like longer, slower cardio burns more fat.

I am an AM workout guy. For me it is just easier to go in the morning (I go around 0400) when all my kids are asleep

I go after work during the week, but enjoy a good morning workout on the weekend. Definitely feel like it's a good start to the day. If I didn't have to work at 7 AM I'd probably go for morning workouts during the week as well.

Ha. Show me one of these "studies"

Well, gained a couple pounds doing the heavier weights. Thought that might have been the reason.

I much rather morning workouts as I typically find excuses not to go if I wait for the evening. Since I've moved back into BR, I already have to get up at 6:30 AM just to make it to work on time without a workout. Getting up at 5AM doesn't sound very pleasant to me, so I go in the evenings, but my lazy arse often comes up with excuses not to..it's a vicious cycle

I'm sure you know this, but to lose you must be at a calorie deficit. Don't worry about lifting lighter weight, you should lift as you normally do to to maintain your muscle cuz it's very rare to gain muscle while losing weight.

Sounds like a Dr. Oz "study"

I did too. Because I was eating 3000 kcals a day. If you want to lose weight, get your diet in shape. You need to track every calorie you consume for a couple of weeks so you can get an idea of what you are really eating. Try myfitnesspal.

In practice the best time to workout is whenever you can. I frequently workout at 9:30 pm because that's the only time I can.
Wow, how do you fall asleep at night? If I would do that, I wouldnt fall asleep until 2-3am.

I'm sure it was water weight. It is impossible to gain two pounds of muscle in a week.
I'd recommend weighing yourself once a week, same day, same time to get the most accurate reading. Friday mornings work well usually.
If you weigh yourself every day and at different times you will drive yourself crazy because weight fluctuates during the day.

I have two lb. fluctuations daily. If you eat 1800 kcals a day and lift as heavy as you can you are not going to gain weight.
