Bought a new humidor a few weeks ago, and the humidity level is up to 77%. Anyone have any suggestions to lower humidity? I’ve heard about silica gel and the kitty litter. TIA.

Get some 60% or 65% desiccant/silica beads.

Got mine off of eBay for cheap. Like $20 for 5 lb. Has lasted me like 3 years and I still have some left.

Keep them saturated in a petri dish but don't overwater them. The beads should absorb all the water. If they don't, drain off the excess otherwise the humidity will be too high and you could get mold and it'll ruin your cigars and it's nearly impossible to remove from Cedar humidors.

Also, check the calibration on your hygrometer. Most of them are really cheap pieces of shite and are way off. Look up the 'salt water bottle cap in a ziplock bag' calibration process.

You can get digital hygrometers at pet stores in the reptile section or with the frogs and terrariums. The digital ones tend to be pretty accurate but I would still check the calibration on them.

What did you put in your humidor to get it to 77%?

I just moved it tonight. It was semi near a window so I moved it to a darker place in the basement. Guess we will see if it helps.

1. Calibrate your hygrometer. Those can be very testy. The analogs are usually garbage and the digital are not much better. Cheap ones do a cheap job.

2. Unless you like a project, get rid of the dishes, beads, etc. use Boveda packs. They typically last a month, but can go way longer if you have a good seal.
Also, some folks “recharge” them.

Bovedas are the “set it and forget it” answer. I threw away my humidor and switched to high-end, water seal Rubbermaid’s. Not very fancy but get the job done very well. I put stickers on them and call it a day.

Most importantly, only use distilled water. Never use tap water. Some PG solution (most cigar shops sell it) helps as well.

Does anyone have the Boveda Smart Sensor? Seems like it could be a good investment.

I own it. It’s another gadget, but the frequency of my smoking has slowed down over the years so having an app I can look at and alerts me if something is off is a great feature. It’s aboiqt protecting my investment. Worth it to me. By the way, I sue the packs as well and they have been useful for my homemade humidor. It likes to breathe so the packs are helpful in maintaining the right humidity. First packs lasted about 4 months.

Same, except I’m using an airtight plastic canister from a canister set

Absolutely. I forgot to mention that. I never think about it cuz I just use the water from my RO filter for everything.

Depends on what you're using to maintain the humidity.

I'm cheap and lazy. I use a kitchen sponge with distilled water. If it gets too humid, I cut the sponge shorter and let a little of the humidity out.

My shitty humidor seems to be very affected by outdoor humidity, but it was a Christmas present. I don't really keep cigars in there much longer than a month or two without smoking them. So, it works fine for me.

ETA One month I really wasn't paying attention, and that bitch got up to like 88% humidity because of fluctuating weather at the end up winter. I looked in there, and some were growing what looked like small bits of mold. I removed the sponge for awhile, wiped the colonies off, and smoked them anyway.
