You could also look into these Celestron 15x70's. ~$70 on amazon.

I'll vouch for these as a nice set of binos, but they may be too heavy for a kid to use for more than a short time (unless you get a tripod).

You can get a really good look at the moon with them.

Yeah if you get the Celestron binoculars make sure to invest in a heavy duty tripod. Something meant for a small camera won’t keep it stable, needs to have some heft

Find a astronomy club in your area. Attend a couple of meetings and talk to some of the members - they are more than happy to help you select your first scope. Attend the astronomy club monthly star gaze - you'll get a good feel for the various types of scopes.

I have six scopes now ranging from an 80 mm guide scope to an 11 inch schmidt-cassegrain which combines aspects of a refractor and reflector.

Enjoy whatever you decide upon - it's a great hobby.

Get him a spotting scope. The image is right side up and great for peeping toms.

A tripod seems like a wasted expense at 250-$1000 but the added stability will greatly improve your image quality.
Sandbags and a $150 tripod works great.

BTW - for those interested, Canon has just announced a new mirrorless astrophotography camera.
