Just decided to upgrade from a 10 gallon I’ve had running for a year now to a 29 gallon. I have a dwarf gurami and 3 platys that I’ll move over after it cycles. Contemplating adding a bristlenose pleco, 5 or so Cory cats, and 5 or so tetras. Checked everything on aqadvisor and it checked out. Any other ideas/suggestions?

I always had cichlids. Bought an albino catfish once and they ate his eyes off

I would keep it at that for now. Do a little homework on tetras. Some will nip at fins and some are just straight up aggressive, such as red eyes and buenos aires

Pets mart will occasionally run $1 tetra sales FWIW

I've got a 20 long, that is stocked with 2 bristle nose plecos, 4 Cory's and about 5 neon tetras. The plecos recently bred, I've seen at least two smaller ones. I also had 2 blue rams, but they croaked.

It's been stocked like that for about 3 years with no issues, so I'd say you could add a few more to your list with a 29. Mine is also heavily planted with various anubias and crypts along with driftwood.

Yea I’m definitely gonna add a good bit of plants and another piece of drift wood or 2. I’m contemplating shrimp too. I tried it in the 10 gallon and they died quick though so I’m kind enough on edge about that one

Just a few comments. Had tanks, up to 100 gals for maybe 30 years, but don't now.

Tetras can be aggressive. Having said that, I always liked neons and cardinals, especially if I could by enough to make a school. I like schools of fish (20-30) - Looks better than one or two - personal preference.

Buy a coolie loach. You will put him in and never see him if there is anywhere he can hide, but he will come out at night and you can watch him before bed, and he could live for 10 years.

You are going to put a lot of catfish in there, but it is your tank.

All of the gouramis (SP?) are nice fish. The blues and pearls look good, are not a shy as the dwarfs and live a long time.

African Cichlids are beautiful fish, but they are incredibly aggressive. They will keep your gravel messed up (like pushing it all to one end, leaving the rest of the tank bare). They will dig up every plant in the tank (live and artificial), and then kill every non african cichlid fish in your tank. If you have only African cichlids, they are fine.

Look at a red tailed shark. Interesting fish (not a shark)

A Plecostomus can grow to a size of 10-12 inches. When they get big, they can clean out your tank.

Buy absolutely the biggest tank you can afford and have space for. Big tanks are easier to run than smaller tanks. Keep the gravel thick - I guess that is a personal preference of mine. There are some very nice artificial plants now, and your fish won't eat them.

Get a hood for your tank. If you can find one, put a large rock in it.

I would recommend an African Dwarf Frog or two. They are incredible fun to watch. Plus they will eat frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp that sink to the bottom.

I had one of those guys when I was a kid in a small tank. Dude was super fun to watch.

Poor thing had to deal with cats that kept knocking it’s tank over though. No telling how traumatized his life was.

ETA. I was thinking of another species. Add them slowly and make sure you have adequate filtration/water changes.

I had a 55gal with African/peacock cichlids. Now I’m down to two nano saltwater tanks.

Discus are pretty cool in a freshwater planted setup.

Cichlids are the most fun freshwater fish IMO
