re: Optometry: LA HB 1065/SB 568: What if your Louisiana Eye Surgeon is NOT an MD?

Can we call it a surgery?

What's next, midwives operating on the pelvis?

It's complex when it's your own eye...

Is there a shortage of people with the necessary skills to perform these procedures? Or do optometrists just want a bigger piece of the pie? Genuine question.
Ophthalmologists feel like they can satisfy the needs fairly easily in this state. If I remember correctly, optometrists posed it as an access issue in more rural areas. But something like 84% of optometrists practice in the same community as an ophth. The remaining 15.9% are within 15 miles of an ophth. There is 1 in the state who is 35 miles from the nearest ophthalmologist.
Now, the saturation of the ophthalmologists and their ability to take on new patients was not presented in that same flier. I also never saw a handout suggesting that they weren't able to take on the increased need.

And why do we need to have a Senate version and a House version simultaneously rolling through?

Optometrists have done over 20,000 of these procedures in Oklahoma alone. All we hear is that Optometrists aren't qualified to do these procedures. Tell me since all of Oklahoma and most of the US have been watching and waiting for an Optometrist to harm a patient and there haven't been any. How can Optometrists be so poorly qualified to perform the procedures?
MD's say Optometrists should be under the medical board the same group that says in testimony that a barber is more qualified to cut on a person than an Optometrist. Yeah that's going to work well.

There are single eye surgeons in Louisiana who have done 20,000+ themselves

Optometrists are capable and will be able to perform surgery once this bill passes the legislature

The laser is focused onto the posterior capsule just posterior to the intraocular lens implant, and it is fired precisely at that location circumferentially around the posterior capsule, with care being taken not to hit the IOL or the vitreous face. That's where the rare complications from that procedure can occur. It's less than a millimeter between these interfaces.
And, I agree with EYEDOCNO. I'm not scared of competing with the optometrists. I just want them held to the same standard I'm held to. Honestly, it's not the laser procedures I'm terribly concerned about. I'm more concerned about seeing botched "simple" eyelid or eye surface procedures showing up in my office.

Considering they've never done any of the procedures they're asking to do, how can you possibly make a statement like this?

How's a peripheral iridotomy work?

When the bill passed the house. Heitmeier has been strong arming other senators for months. I'll be absolutely shocked if this bill doesn't end up on Jindal's desk. And he'll sign it.

Jindal contemplated med school. No way he signs that

The same YAG laser is focused onto a crypt in the peripheral iris stroma, and the laser burns a hole through the iris until aqueous is visualized flowing from posterior chamber to the anterior chamber through the patent iridotomy.

Do you not follow the success they have had in Oklahoma?

Now how's a trabeculoplasty work?

Presumably they will receive comparable training in those procedures. I don't think a serious person could remotely believe they're proposing to go in cold, and I don't think implying it helps your case any.

He absolutely will sign it as of now. The eye MDs I've talked to in the LOA have said Jindal isn't willing to get involved at this point. There was talk of getting a group to request a meeting with him with the hope that he'd tell the senate to put this bill under the scope of the medical board under veto threat, but I don't know what came of that.
