Don't do open if you have a choice, in which I think you should.
I did, lap was longer procedure, and they had to catheter me to get me to pee, while awake! That was the worst part, recovery two weeks, but after first two or three days you start moving around a lot more.
I've heard open is a longer recovery and higher chance of infection, rupture, etc

Also with lap they can check the other side for free, if they find one they charge to repair but the check was free for me.

And your, belly button will be deformed for life.

I had open for an inguinal hernia right before Christmas, I think it went smooth. Doc advised no golf for 6 weeks, I played with no discomfort at 5. Someone asked me about it this past week, I said I haven't even thought about it in weeks. I go for my last follow up visit next week. I have a 5-6 inch scar, and pubic hair still not grown back.

Good luck with yours.

Had 2 on the same side. First one blew out after 2 years. Had the second to repair the first. Both open. Neither were that bad for me. Only took pain pills the day after and was up and walking on the 3rd day. Went back to work after a week on light duty. I'm a desk jockey so it wasn't bad at all. Just take it easy for a few weeks and you will be fine.

I've had the open repair. Pain really wasn't that bad after a couple of days. Regarding open vs lap I know of 2 people who's repairs failed and both were performed lap. If your surgeon is more comfortable performing it open I wouldn't try to change his mind. You having it repaired in Houston?

An open inguinal hernia can be done under local with IV sedation. Just an option...
