The ladder doesn't extend above the red mark on this image...it's only used in the portion of the spire that had virtually no footholds...

man, i watched this whole thing live...there was only a short portion where the ladder was used...the ladder does not go to the top of the spire where he stood and took selfies at the end of the climb...

watch the video it's forwarded to the ladder....
The lower blank section has a not so obvious ladder (watch him go hand over foot) and then Alex opts out of using the obvious upper one near the top... because he's just that damn good
... I'm guessing they asked him to use the harness after completion when his wife get's included.
