quote:

Exactly 76 years ago, on August 1, 1943, Lidya Litvyak disappeared. She was the greatest (by number of victories) of the two only female fighter pilots "ace" of history. I used the verb "disappear" not by chance. In fact - even if Wikipedia and several books gives her for dead on that day - in reality there is no certainty about her desappearance. Indeed, something is certain, and it is that Litvyak did not return to the base that day, after being attacked by the Messerschmitt Bf 109s of the Luftwaffe, on the Mius River, in the south-eastern Ukraine, where a bloody battle was underway on the German defensive line that ran along that river. The official Soviet (first) version and Russian later, is that she was killed in combat (an indispensable condition for recognizing her as Hero of the USSR), but there is strong evidence that she survived. Having explored her last battlefield for years around Dmitryevka and questioned the locals, I can say - with reasonable certainty - that Litvyak survived, was imprisoned and, once freed, rebuilt a new life in the West. A film story or - at least - for a song...

Whether or not she's using oxygen in 2019, that's a no.

I’m not sure why they added this statement. First of all it was not called “Hero of the USSR”, it was “Hero of the Soviet Union”. And it was never a requirement to die in order to receive the title.

That's true, but in her particular case, some in the Soviet military suspected she had survived and was held prisoner by the Nazis. That suspicion alone kept her from receiving that honor.

Now why would the powers-that-be take the letters W Y H I out of my title?

Is this her?

If so, she’s wearing the Hero of the Soviet Union medal in this picture.

Ok. I was wondering why someone posted this picture, especially since she’s clearly already been awarded Hero of the Soviet Union.

One thing I’ve always wondered is why it’s such a small, rather plain looking medal. I mean, looking at the plethora of rather fancy, almost gaudy medals the Soviets handed out in WWII, you’d think their highest honor would not be quite so plain. I guess it's maybe because it was introduced in the early 1930s when attitudes toward military rank & awards were rather different than they were in the 40s.
