Ohio State jumps on the anti Greek bandwagon

Dave Isaacs, a spokesman for the Office of Student Life, told The Lantern the majority of conduct investigations involve hazing and alcohol.
“The university will not tolerate behavior that puts the health and safety of its students at risk,” Isaacs said in a statement.
For now, the suspension includes all chapter activities. Chapter presidents are responsible for submitting a list of “essential activities” by Nov. 20 to the university.
Those lists are then reviewed by the university and need approval before activities continue.
“Until then, you are not to engage in any activities,” the letter from Ryan Lovell, the university’s senior director for sorority and fraternity life, read.

I think there should be Greek life, but the schools shouldn't be associated.
Especially if they receive public funding.
In today's world lawyers/politicians/SJW have ruined this type of thing. Not worth the risk for schools.

Student conduct codes have become frighteningly vague and broad. The student affairs types at most universities have become the morality police whose concept of fun is for everyone to be as miserable as they are.

Most of higher education is 'for profit'...they stand to lose hundreds of millions if kids keep drinking themselves to death.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for on campus fraternities/sororities. You're pretty much asking for trouble if you stay on campus.

This aspect of Greek life always confused me, why are they associated with the schools that much? I understand that a lot (majority) of Greek houses are on the campuses of the schools, but honestly, what could a school do if a house wasn’t located on campus?

The chapters also derive big benefits from being on campus. Few could survive as independents. Being on campus makes insurance underwriters and mortgage lenders willing to do business with them, for example. They wouldn't touch an off campus chapter with a ten foot pole.

This isn't about stopping kids from drinking themselves to death. That is as common with non-Greeks as it is with Greeks. This is about a group of people who see Greeks as everything wrong with the college experience, and using their positions of power to neuter or completely remove Greeks from campus life. The black fraternities brand new members, but that's never an issue with the university administration. If a white fraternity makes its pledges be the DD for a mixer or a tailgate, it's hazing. The universities see Greeks as bastions of white privilege and will do anything to end them.

Not entirely true. The black fraternities seem to have more leeway, but they can and do get in trouble. BTW, when I was in school the worst hazers were the honorary societies within ROTC. They hazed the shite out of their new initiates, including brutal PT. The university looked the other way.
While the SJW aspect is part of it, a bigger motivation is to get the university out from under liability. An indpendent kid's death is a tragedy. A greek kid's tragedy is a tragedy, a publicity black eye, and a lawsuit.

All fair points. Except the bastion of white privilege remark.
It boils down to Greek life is mostly an on campus, extra curricular activity. When a member dies, it's on the University.
When some kid overdrinks at a bar off campus and dies, it's not on the University.

There's no beach, unless you count Lake Erie and dirty needles.
Sports teams largely are disappointing.
Weather is shitty for 6 months..and there's only shite little hills to ski on.
The biggest attraction in Ohio is going to an OSU game to get fricked up or go to Cedar Point and wait in lines for a roller coaster all day.
Maybe catch a Bone Thugs concert, but only see 2 members because the others are locked up.
Visit Ohio.
