Well that's the location of the rig. He saw the fireball 30-45 miles Southwest.

30-45 miles is nothing compared to the huge sea.

Plus, we will say the oil rig is max 200 feet tall. Line of Sight will only be 15 miles from that point. So it was most likely closer than that guy is imagining.

ETA: It says 30-45 km, so that would make sense. It would convert to about 18-20 miles

Jim, where did you get this picture?

Vung Tau is a perfect location to view the plane coming down if true

You can see the New Orleans skyline from old Mandeville, what's that? 30-40 miles of water?

Part of me thinks the plane passed through a wrinkle in the timespace continuum and reentered in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947

Can you actually see the buildings or just the lights?

Im just using simple math for line of sight. Lights obviously travel a little bit so you could see it a little farther. So it could have been further given it was a huge fireball the guy saw.

I was on a rig in the GOM once when the platform malfunctioned and all three emergency flare booms fired off. We were basically an enormous fire ball. I knew someone on another offshore structure east of me and they phoned me up to see if I could see the fireball from my location. When I told him it was my platform they could hardly believe it. They said we were extremely visible to them. We pulled out the offshore block maps and were able to figure out our locations were a little over 50 miles apart.

With the right air you can see the buildings depending on where you are.

It was on another message board. I don't know where they got it. Could be fabricated for all I know. But it fits the original hypothesis.

ETA: and there is a rig called the Songa Mercur and it is off the coast of Vietnam LINK

So now the Malaysian military "unable" to release any data. Is this part of them back tracking and not wanting to admit fault?

Wow this is an inside job by Malaysian government.
