This is what you have to do.

Steps to obtain a Louisiana general contractor license Each license type has specific requirements that a contractor needs to comply with. However, in general, he or she will need to follow these steps Fill out an application form and submit any required documentation Provide proof of good financial standing, demonstrating at least $10,000 net worth Pass all relevant exams and/or complete mandatory training For all but the commercial license, provide proof of insurance Be approved by the Board

There is a downside to this. There are people who can't take test for shite, but would be a great contractor..

I know a few guys.. Well, one specifically, who has been doing plumbing work since he was 14. His grandfather was a certified plumber and a contractor. He worked under his until his grandfather passed away. He can do the work with his eyes closed, but in order to keep doing plumbing work he had to become certified (since he couldn't work under his grandfather's license). He took the test a few times and wasn't able to pass the test.

A general or sub has to have a license to receive payment for work. Subbing out your own house has nothing to do with a license or insurance. You’re just saving the 20% that the general will charge for scheduling the subs
