NOLA has Statue Issues - Alabama Celebrates Jefferson Davis Birthday

quote:
Alabama's state offices are closed Monday (June 6) in honor of Jefferson Davis' birthday, according to AL.com. Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America.
quote:
The holiday commemorates the birthday of Davis, who led the Confederate States of America from 1861-1865. Alabama is the last state to have a legal holiday to set aside solely to commemorate the birthday of Davis.
quote:
Alabama has three separate holidays set aside to honor Confederate leaders: Robert E. Lee's birthday, which is marked in January on the same day as Martin Luther King Day; Confederate Memorial Day in April; and Davis' birthday in June.
quote:
Alabama’s State Capitol and Grounds are designated a National Historic Landmark as the First Capitol of the Confederate States of America with a statue of President Davis at the entrance. President-elect Jefferson Davis rode down Dexter Avenue in Montgomery, in an open carriage without any security to the cheers of thousands and delivered his First Inaugural Speech from the same steps of the Alabama Capitol, where, in 1944, eight Confederate Veterans gathered for the last Veterans' Reunion, in front of a large Confederate Battle Flag.

You can make a case for Robert E. Lee being an honorable man who was serving his home state when it came under attack. You cannot make such a case for Jefferson Davis. He was pretty horrible. I am not against remembering the Confederate dead and do not want to wipe away history. However, honoring Jeff Davis is a pretty ridiculous thing to do in this day and age. The man was a slavery promoting traitor to the United States with few redeeming qualities who never really reformed.

I'm all about the protection of Confederate history, but this holiday isn't worthy.

Simple fix, those wanting to celebrate Jefferson Davis' birthday can take the day off with no consequences. Those who do not support the holiday can work as if it was a normal work day.

agreed.
Robert E Lee day on MLK day is kinda stupid too.
make them separate so that people can really recognize Lee.

IMO, you are overstating a bit. Jefferson wasn't as vile of a man as you suggest, he was mostly a product of his time and place. Nevertheless, I agree with your overall point, and it is an important one.
Robert E. Lee is a different type of person than Jefferson Davis. Their roles, personalities, and historical impact were very different. I hate that they get "broad-brushed" together.
It's time for Alabama to end the Jefferson Davis memorial holiday, IMO, and NOLA needs to keep Lee Statue where it is at Lee Circle.

That's how it's done in SC. Both are state holidays but separately.

Robert E. Lee and I have the same birthday, January 19th, which always falls on MLK day extended weekend.
MLK's birthday was January 15th.
MLK's birthday was January 15th.

So many SJWs glorify people that have/had the balls to stand up against the gov't. Why not J.Davis and other leaders of the south?
I wonder how many know what the original reasons were for the split??
