For 3 main reasons:

1) Phones and cameras are not intrinsically safe. The plant goes to length to make sure hazards can't be ignited and they don't need Joe Blow contractor blowing the place up with his Straight Talk wireless Iphone 5s.

2) Most plants would make really large bombs. So, homeland security appreciates it if the terrorists can't do recon on instagram.

3) The Chinese will buy and use stolen proprietary process info. Ask Dow Plaquemine about that.

It's not just inside the gates either. A truck driver leaving a gate was seen taking a picture on his phone. The state police tracked him down in a hurry and detained him until he deleted the photos.

ETA: sorry for the repost

Yeah, Dow is REAL touchy about cellphones, recording devices, access to information, etc.

The dude who stole their CPE technology got five years of federal time for it.

Not even that unheard of, honestly. These are billion dollar corporations that own the plant. Nearly all of them have entire departments dedicated to social media relations. It's in the paperwork you sign to work that you cant put pictures on the internet.

It is extremely unheard of for the State Police to be called in or chase someone down because of a picture being taken.

What jurisdiction do they have; what law is being broken?

It's technically a Homeland Security issue when you go posting sensitive info like that. And those cats are a lot more present than you'd imagine. Any time Ive seen them run drug/weapons sweeps it has always been multiple agencies from city to federal.

Not saying his story is legit but they do all work together. Especially when it comes to the giant bombs we work in

I think the technology/radiation in these devices slows the photosynthesis process, making it more difficult for the plants to synthesize food and produce oxygen.

Hope this helps.

When I had to give a presentation to the company I work for about a project, I had to send all photos and the powerpoint to the plant before I could get approval.

It's a real headache but rules are rules. I don't blame them either if somehow another company could steal the proprietary intellectual property.

I'm telling you it isn't legit.

Homeland Security or the FBI will be called in for some things that deal with actual security breaches. Local PD if it is something criminal that is minor.

They are doing a shitty job combing Instagram. The State Police should be alerted with all the photos on there.

The old contractor giving BJs in the port-o-let. Used to the story went that they were busted because all the hands were lining up at one shithouse.

Good to know the tall tale is being updated for technology.

Not a tall tale. They werent blowing anyone onsite but you could meet them at the Walmart parking lot there across from the high school after shift. Happened in September last year.

Dude, if a plant has access to any waterway, that's Homeland Security, son. If they think you're casing the joint, there are way worse people than the State Police that might come looking for you.

On a completely different matter, I rolled up to work one day and the main gate was all blocked off with white federal government unmarked cars. After a while, two U.S. Marshals show up from inside the fenceline with a guy in cuffs, put him in a car and hauled arse. We're a MARSEC facility, so a TWIC is required. I have no clue how that fricking idiot thought he wouldn't be instagrabbed by the Marshals when he submitted to a full federal background check with fingerprinting.

I had a similar experience at a plant. When I was a sales rep selling commercial roofing materials, a customer of mine installed a roof in a plant and a couple of years later a roofing material warranty problem came up and we were asked by the material manufacturer to take pictures of the problem. We set up a meeting at the plant to take the pictures and once we were there, the plant maintenance guy that accompanied us to the roof wouldn't allow us to use our camera. He had a camera and he took the pictures we needed and gave us the photos on a disc. And this was a roof on the plant administration building, not in any of the units.

My experience wasn't quite that bad. It was an expansion to an existing plant and we were still on a lot of civil and deep foundation work. Basically before I even started, they told me I couldn't take any pictures of the existing plant (even if it was accidentally caught in the background). I still had to turnover the pictures and powerpoint for approval before I could give the presentation.
