Very lucky to be able to have that experience.
and meanwhile stiffs like me go through school just barely hanging on, always on the verge of being washed out!

Those two months at Lawrenceville were incredible. My dad, his two brothers and my aunt all went to boarding school in Massachusetts. Boarding school is the best experience a kid can get.
My brother went to one in Virginia and I almost did as well. Wish I would have.

I'll put it this way: Don Draper was the king of NY. He went out to LA in the 'Jet Set' episode of Mad Men and was like... "whoa".

Marketing exec isn't the king of NYC. That would be Investment Bankers.

a friend of mine up there is a "retired" investment banker, he still works his arse off because he loves it, still on a bunch of boards, was chairman of AMEX as of a couple of years ago, now, he has the $ to live in NYC the way it's meant to be, fortunately for me, he treats me like the son he always wanted

that's not too inaccurate, he, and a lot of those dudes have their fingers on the pulse of the world

Portland definitely doesn't belong. It's even smaller than Austin and is like a little village compared to NY. Portland is just a poor man's Seattle anyway.
I don't think the comparison should be NY or LA because LA isn't the same type of city. LA is like Houston but with much better weather. NY is like Chicago, Toronto, and San Francisco. That's a better question.

Of course they do. I was a young stockbroker trainee and met Sandy Weil and Jaime Diamond. Those guys are so badass.

I really like LA though, always have had fun in that city. Traffic is too big of a bitch though

Dude, I know that. What I mean is that in terms of the general lifestyle he leads: rich enough to have a great condo, eat and drink at the best places, and pull endless trim; he may not be literally THE king, but he has it made. Point being, he then goes to LA and the climate and women make him seriously second-guess his life even though he is definitely living NYC life to the fullest.

he took my wife and I to see a show a few years ago, pulls into full parking garage right across the street from the theater, attendant comes out to ask him what he thinks he's doing and he shows him an NYPD badge, I'm going WTF? turns out he is an adviser to the city of NY as a board member of the Homeland Security and the badge "facilitates" his position, he said when he was issued the badge he told them he would be very discreet with it, and was told in all seriousness, "try not to kill anyone, it generates mountains of paperwork" the attendant let him park there for the show, then after the show we go to Del Frisco's and when he walks in it's like parting the Red Sea, he's got his own table there, awesome dude, and fairly humble despite all of that

Best kind of guys. They own it, but don't flaunt it.

that's him, sounds like you've been around a lot more of those types than I have but what sets him apart from some that I've seen is he knows everyone in the building from the guy sweeping the floor on up, takes time to talk with them, knows about their families, etc., and consequently everyone is fiercely loyal to him, the only reason he was even driving that night was that he'd had a driver for the past 26 years and just bought a new car and wanted to see what it was like

My BIL runs the best "balanced" mutual fund in the country according to Lipper and Moody's. 5 star from NOLA. I know.
You would never know it if you met him. Humble, a normal guy who likes to drink beer and watch football.
He is on CNBC all the time.

He routinely wins the awards for best 3. 5 and 10 year performance. Just crossed the billion dollar mark on assets in the fund. They also manage over 5 billion of foundations and personal money managed accounts. Family business that has been around for over 100 years.
