I would suggest you search on the Travel Board. There are a bunch of threads with good recommendations there.

Stay in the Hell's Kitchen area, pretty close to all the touristy things, but a lot cheaper if you rent an apartment via Air BnB.

Thank you for posting that. I read the thread title in that intonation and was about to go crazy, because I didn't remember where it comes from.

Any suggestions?

Transit museum in Brooklyn
Opera at Lincoln Center
Central Park
Rockefeller Center/Times Square/Grand Central Terminal
Battery Park/Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
Wall Street/Stock Exchange
Brooklyn Bridge
Gantry State Park in Long Island City (best view of skyline hands down)
Citi Field or Yankee Stadium
If you're going in the summer you might catch US Open for Tennis
Little Italy, not so little Chinatown- or if you get brave go to the real little Italy on Arthur Ave in the Bronx
Grimaldi's in Brooklyn if you like coal fired pizza
MoMa, the Met, or the Natural History Museum

The list is endless...

The sea, air, and space museum on the Intrepid is pretty awesome.

I didn't get to see an event, but the tour of Madison Square Garden was cool.
