That would destroy their "if you're innocent, you have nothing to fear from the cops" argument. It's just easy to demonize the victim in this case.

Where's the gun?

Cops get a report of someone (or someone in a group) flashing a gun.

Cops pull up to the scene and see three people matching the description (clue #1)

Dude is walking to the truck, sees cops, immediately does a 180, and walks sketchily away (clue #2)

Dude is obvious aware of the police, as he just saw them pull up, and doesn't pay attention to the police orders. He abandons his friends and shuffles away while cops scream at him to stop (clue #3)

Dude finally turns and, instead of stopping and putting his hands up at the sight of guns pointed at him, he grabs his waistband and fiddles around as if to pull out a gun (clue #4)


When the cops are already on high alert due to reports of a gun being flashed around and you factor in the clues above, it's not hard to see how this happened.

It sucks and I feel for all parties involved, but the situation could have just as easily been worse as it could have been avoided

And I'm normally pretty outspoken on ignorant cops shooting folks but this one is as easy as it gets.
