There's a huge one down I-12 not too far from Hammond. I can't remember exactly where it is.

Thankfully my salary is high enough that I've never even thought about doing something like that

Search for "u-pull it" or similar. Hell yes, I was at one today. Tell the dudes in front what you're looking for. I'd research prices of whatever you're needing on rock auto.com or similar before going though.

I went to one once. I got a knife as a gift that had a few gadgets, seat belt cutter, window breaker, etc. I was showing it off to a friend and he said "that window breaker is cool and all but it's just for show. It won't actually break a window". So we headed to the salvage yard and I put the window breaker on the knife to the test. Hit the outside of the window and barely left a mark. Ended up throwing a bolt or something through a window so my buddy could prove his point on how hard it is to break a car window. We later found out that windows break a whole hell of a lot easier from the inside and that's what the window breaker on the knife is meant for. That's about the extent of my salvage yard experience, other than one of my best friend's family owning one.

You're going to get a flat tire driving within 500 feet of a scrap yard.

My dad is retired, extremely successful, no reason to really concern himself with minute financial savings, and he still goes to salvage yards regularly for parts to his truck.

I went once or twice and that was enough for me!

Identify electronics stores in your area. Go look in their trash bins.
