I came up with banking software that I sold to several banks that calculates all the bank's transactions for the purposes of calculating the interest. I found that it was constantly producing fractions of a penny from interest calculations. Here is the best part. I set it up to send me just the fractions of a penny that are less than .5 a cent. I'm currently using the proceeds to build a super computer that can protect me and my millions. It looks pretty cool so far.

It doesn't say explicitly that it was done on the company time, but it's a safe assumption that he developed the program in his normal course of business working for the company. I still think that there should be a way that he could legitimately leverage that he came up with the process if he played his cards right. I don't have the details, and it probably just would not be worth my own time to figure out exactly how though.

So the program does his job in ten minutes, but he spends 1.5 hours adding in human error? Fantastic. How uniformed about how technology works must his boss be?

OK I'll bite. What if the genius in question sells *himself* to the next highest bidder, and his software wizardy just happens to come along.

Wasn't expecting a superman 3 reference
Don't think I've ever seen a superman 3 reference.
Good on you lad.

I had a job that was similar. I just came up with a much more streamlined way of doing my job. I could finish the job in what took 8 days in 4 days. Did I tell the bosses?... HELL NO! When I would come back from vacation people were very happy.

I find it odd that this company hasn't even thought of a way to make this job more efficient. If we were talking a few days faster, I'd get it. But a month? Has it not occurred to them that they could improve the process?
I love the effort, but he's clearly acting unethically, at the very least with his lying and misdirection with fake bugs.

I believe he's trying to say STFU and ride the wave

Could he not offer to sell his script or program to the company and then ask for another assignment? I mean he is also having the company pay people to correct mistakes that shouldn't be there as well. Maybe a bonus and promotion if he handles this right

Sounds like the toothpaste is out of the tube. Can you improve what you did, then tell them?

Right... I don't think we have enough information
It should be easy enough to prove (using login time stamps) if he did or didn't develop and test the software on company time... either way, if he plays his cards right, he can come out on top

Infinitely. Sounds important. Is that you God?

It's just a bit of a pet peeve of mine. It bothers me when people use "infinitely" or "exponentially" to say "a lot." The words have precise meanings to me. It's probably an unreasonable notion of mine.

How is he paid?
If you're a salaried employee, I don't see a problem.
If you're hourly, it is unethical.
