No relo allowance? Some companies will pay out the lease. Try to get your new employer to assist.

You should get your new employer to handle all of this. They should also fly out to find a new place to live

quote:Yeah, I was definitely going to pay whatever, I'm just wanting to know if I'm reading that line correctly as that value is what I'd pay to break the lease. I just don't want to get stuck with paying the remainder of the lease, because that'd be around $9k
Breaking a lease depends on the landlord. For me in Seattle it's 1.5x rent. Probably no way to get around it even if it's for work. Just man up and pay it.
quote:This is a great idea. Luckily, the coworker that is bringing me along with him is from the area, so he's going to help show me good places to live so I have a better idea before I make the trek
When I move I always drive out to where I am moving first, stay in a hotel, find a place to live, then fly back and get the rest of my stuff with a van or uhaul truck. Although depending on where you are going a moving pod may be cheaper. I don't want to move all my stuff without a place first.

quote:I haven't officially spoken to them regarding the job, but it's one of those sure things (the coworker that has been given an offer was told he could bring his own team and we'd negotiate on Friday). I've been informed there will be a monthly vehicle allowance as well as relocation / moving expenses covered.
Did you not negotiate moving cost into your contract with the new company?

Last time I broke lease they wouldn't budge on 2 month rent penalty which was astronomical in DC. Instead we had apartment placed back on the market, we advertised on Craigslist and offered to pay their move in fees. Saved us thousands.
I think unless you are military or negotiate something before you sign the lease you are SOL unless your company agrees to pay for it

First off, you're going to love SLC (assuming you like the outdoors). Being 30 mins away from multiple, world class resorts is just awesome. Absolutely beautiful up there and the Mormon influence is much less prevalent than it once was. Some of the liquor laws are a little weird but they have a good craft beer scene.
Regarding your move, sell your stuff, take that money and add it to what you would have spent on the trailer rental, and buy new(used) stuff when you get up there. If you were just moving a few hours away I would say rent a trailer. In your case, dragging a trailer is going to turn a 23 hr drive into a 30+ hr drive. The smart move is to load as much as you can into your truck and buy the rest once you're there.
