I have a friend who is taking a 6 month consulting gig in Indianapolis. He's going to be looking for an apartment there. He'll be working downtown, and has a wife and kid, so he wants someplace upscale, but reasonably priced (around $1200 for a 2 BR), but not downtown.

Does anybody on this board know Indianapolis well enough to recommend an area of town that fits the bill? Or even a specific apartment complex?

Carmel, Fishers, Broadripple. Also, Avon area is good area to live.

Eta: consulting for Lilly or Conseco?

I live downtown right meow. Carmel is a very upscale suburb that is not far from downtown - about a 30-40 minute commute with traffic I believe. He can probably find something reasonable there. Broadripple is within Indianapolis but outside of downtown. Apartments and housing are cheaper out there than downtown. Broadripple also has nice bars/restaurants and other things to do. I don't know much about other areas. Downtown tends to be more expensive, but I have a few married friends that have found reasonable prices.
