FTL isn't possible. There are ways to get going at a respectable % of C though but we have to get off of Earth first which is currently the biggest hurdle.

quote:in regards to the requirements, i'm not sure physical constants/factors are applicable. any ftl propulsion is most assuredly going to involve utilizing causality beyond spatio-temporal constraints. in sci-fi, these types of ideas have been expressed as "subspace" or "hyperspace." regardless of the nomenclature, we would be stepping outside of the physical boundaries we exist in. that's why i'm not sure it's even possible. it's a "supraphysical" mode of action. the beings in abbott's flatland were said to have encountered a 3d being. how could they even interact? how could the 2d being even comprehend the 3d being. they're not even in the same existential manifold. i just don't see how we can move ourselves beyond the 3d bulk without bifurcating our consciousness from our bodies.
Do you even special relativity bro?

It will have to become possible if we are to truly venture into space. Traveling at the speed of light is not an option even if possible. The nearest star would still take 4 years at that speed.
We know that gravity can bend spacetime and that is what we must master. It may me something on a ship or a gate floating in space, but we have to bend space time to make it possible.
We know how we can do it, we just do not how we get enough energy to do it.

How does it get there? What rivers does it use?

Physics is different at the quantum level than it is in our macroscopic state. If we can manage to bring quantum tunneling, entanglement and other exotic quantum properties to our level then we may be able to send artificial intelligence robots into the Universe.
As the meatbag products of evolution that we are, we'll never be able to travel far from home. We simply can't adapt to the rigors of space travel. We'll have to depend upon AI.

Gravity is the effect of mass interacting with spacetime. It's actually mass that bends or warps spacetime, causing gravity.

Looks like the Tenn-Tom waterway.

quote:the idea that we can "compress" the spacetime "ahead" of a ship and elongate it "behind" the ship just doesn't seem rational. even if you create/manipulate gravitons, you can't "point" them in a direction that i'm aware of. they just create gravity in all directions. so if you did have a device that produced them, it would create gravitational pull from all directions, including behind the ship. so you would be shrinking space all around you. how does that even make sense? the ship would just fragment into disparate areas of space. gravity can't be "directed" or pointed that i'm aware of.
We know that gravity can bend spacetime
that's why the gravity on star trek, etc, is so dumb. the gravity device in the ceiling for the deck above you would pull you upwards to the ceiling. yes, i realize there is a device in the floor beneath you but you would still be pulled upward so you would float off the floor. it's absurd actually.

from the linked article: "such a thing just doesn't seem to be entirely within the realm of possibility"
as i've been explaining, it's squarely in the realm of scifi. i wish it weren't though. the idea of stretching space can't supervene the reality that point-particle physics isn't "directional." it's "radial."
now, string theory does not conform to point-particle physics (classical physics [newtonian, lorentzian, einsteinian], quantum physics). i suppose it's possible to "point" a vibration from a string but string theory is purely mathematical at this time. it's not "real" or evidential in any sense.

quote:it's an interesting gesture but, ultimately, i'm not sure how this helps. the idea of "transporting" using entaglement has been theorized but in reality, it's two previously entangled particles that are linked at a very mysterious quantum level. so i suppose the idea is we're in a ship. we create some kind of entanglement but, that's really creating 2 ships that are linked. you still have to "send" one of the linked particles somewhere. their behaviors are then linked.
entanglement
quote:sadly, i think this is true. i wish it weren't. again, if we could loose our consciousness from our mortal coils/3d bulk bodies, then perhaps we could engage in supracosmic activities but, my word, how is that even conceivable?
As the meatbag products of evolution that we are, we'll never be able to travel far from home
even if we were to invent some supracosmic mode of transport (such as hyperspace, etc), how would we even survive? our bodies are "stuck" in this reality. i get that the awd allegedly creates a "bubble" but, again, i have pointed out how even the idea is problematic at best. point-particle physics are not directional
quote:precisely. and mass can't be "directionalized" as far as we know
It's actually mass that bends or warps spacetime, causing gravity.
