Napoleon help! Out of balance washer

I finally replaced the belts on my 1980s Maytag and followed the guide to ensure the motor to drum belt was slightly tighter than the motor to pump belt.
I also slightly tweaked the washer feet to ensure its perfectly level.
However when it hits high speed spin it starts to squeak and if I peek inside I can see the drum is wildly spinning off center. It does this even when empty.
The washer ends up almost sideways by the time its finished.
What am I missing? This just started recently.

You're missing a new washer.

Have you tried spreading your towels around evenly inside?

Did you check the rollers the drum rests on?

sounds like a counterweight issue

80's style Maytag?
Did you put the plastic snubber ring back in place?
Maybe a spring snapped or came off when changing a belt. Those maytags use a water ring for counter balance, when your washer is empty do you hear water if you move the tub? It's possible the water ring busted and is now dry, and in that case MJ2 would be correct that it's a counterbalance issue.
If you hear the water then it's not that. I would look at springs next, if all springs are in tact and the bottom support is resting on the snubber ring, then your problems are internal, like a broken bearing or something is wrong at the trunion where the drum is attached to the transmission.,

Thanks I'll check both things tonight
Eta I just removed the belts from underneath. Don't recall seeing anything like a snubber. I had the washer laying on its back.

hmm, there are different models with different set ups, yours may be mounted on the tri-pod looking thing. I would think springs are the issue, as they tens to rust and pop.
Shockingly I had a 1993 Maytag dryer motor swap today. Cost the customer $315 but she was happy to have the old thing running again. But for a diy'er like you the motor is only $76. But a PITA to change. I definitely thought of you and your love for old Maytags when I saw it. It's the first seized motor I have ever seen in a classic maytag dryer.
If you ever have a question and I can't answer fast enough, go to " Apliantology.org" that place is THE treasure trove for appliance knowledge. I learned 90% of what I know from there and the training the owner offers.
