In this conveyor belt scenario, the only thing the plane needs to overcome is the friction produced in the wheel bearings of the landing gear. An airplane should be able to do this with no problem, and take off. Thoughts?
It should be just like running on a tread mill. It shouldn't be able to build up any airspeed for takeoff.

If i put a plane in "neutral" on a conveyor belt moving backwards.....does the plane roll backwards or does it sit in one spot with the wheels turning backwards?

you think they'll reverse the belt and let him try to land on it??

It rolls backwards, of course. And if it taxis forward at the same speed the conveyor is going backwards, it won't move. But neither of those scenarios involve the jet engines.

just because the wheels are moving doesnt mean air is moving over the wings.
if you put on roller skates and got on a treadmill, would your hair blow in the wind? no.

its the same thing.
an airplane taking off isnt about ground speed, its about air flow over the wings. if wind is blowing 500 miles an hour and the wheels arent moving, the plane can still take off.

No it's not. Because the jet engines push the plane forward, not the wheels.

yeah but they wont be using a jet.
they will be using an ultralight
eta: it says ultralight...not sure if that means glider or one of those gyro machines.

okay, a prop?
If the plane uses the wheels to build up takeoff speed, it won't work... but if it uses a jet engine, or a prop, something of that nature, it'll fly.
Posted on 12/12/07 at 6:51 pm to LSUBoo
do gliders even have props?
if this is what they use...maybe
but if its something like this, i dont see it happening.
i dont know...i just dont see it happening, are you an engineer that understands all this stuff? im not qualified, im no good at math or physics so i cant say for sure....it just seems like to me, the faster the engine moves the plane, the faster the treadmill goes...but its still just treading water.

Trust me.
That little prop plane will take off.
