Goldennugget has an entire YouTube series about building a tank.
I would start there.

I would just buy the little shite some fish sticks and tell him to get a real pet.

NO! But at the center of life, is IF... man. You never know.
If you do get him a bunch of fish, just stop at the grocery store and get some bread crumbs/ corn meal on the way home.

Take him to a canal and dip some grass shrimp and minnows. Try to get some male sailfin mollys and golden topminnows. They are very hardy. Throw a couple of aquatic snails in there too. You'll have a nice little setup that is cheap and fun for your kid.

Cat-boy as Grim Reaper.
Yes, sonny, everybody dies.
One objective is an ecological system. That is, relatively self sustaining/cleaning.
eventually the power is going off and the system aerator is going to stop.
Aeration is a controlling factor for growth.
Fwiw fish is a better choice than gerbils or rats.

Get a bunch of beta fish in 1 tank. Very good together.

we had a simple bowl with a Beta for my 10yr old, 5yr old thought it would be funny to hide it...found it dried up in sock drawer in the older kid's bedroom

The bigger the better when dealing with them. While not big, a 50 to 75 gallon would be good if youre going to get into it more than just doing the bare necessities for your kid. The bigger the tank the easier it is to take care of
If you just want something small, get a 20 gallon long. You can put this anywhere because water changes can be done with a bucket. Its also big enough to put a school or two of small fish, like a tetra.
First thing when getting an aquarium is that you need to cycle the tank. Just google it for some tips. Its very easy but will take a little time depending on the route you go.
If you go the 75 gallon route, placement starts to get more important because you would want a nearby sink for water changes.
You would use something like this to suck out the old water and replace with new water. Its very easy to use
In a 75 gallon, you will be able to put a lot more fish and have more activity for the tank. Once again, after the tank is established, its super easy to take care of.
Those tubes run 25 and 50 feet so have a sink that far away. Also, dont put the tank by a window or where it gets sunlight. Algae will start to grow.
Dont buy 'algae eaters'. They produce more waste than most fish you will ever own. They dont clean up anything. Most pet stores sell these Plecos. They are very dirty and get massive. Im talking massive for a home aquarium
Goldfish are a great aquarium fish. You wont need a heater and they are very hardy when not getting mauled by a cat.
Dont listen to the people saying go catch shite in the canal. Thats a fantastic way to bring plenty of diseases into your aquarium.
Crawfish are dirty as hell. Dirty as in one of them can smell up a room
Most local fish like perch and bass are mean as hell
Any other questions ill answer

On another note, people saying its hard to keep clean are wrong. Now dont get me wrong, some work goes into it. I mean that should come as a given. Youre taking care of living things.
Im down to one 75 gallon aquarium in my house along with a pond outside. I would say I spend an hour week tops with the inside aquarium. If you dont overcrowd the aquarium and dont over feed them, they are very easy to take care of
