Jim was 25 years younger than Marlin. When show started in 1963 Marlin was around 57 or 58 while Jim was 32 or 33 making Marlin 80 and Jim 55 when Marlin retired in 1985 due to health reasons (died of lymphoma a year later).
Your points have some validity, but given age differences I would give Marlin a little more of a break for staying out the action through years and for dying before Jim.

Jim's body took some serious abuse back in the day, and he still made it to 89. Hell of a man.
