The Gifford Fire is now pushing 100 thousand acres and is still well away from Santa Barbara. It is burning primarily to the north into unpopulated areas.
A new fire that started today and is a much more immediate threat to more populated areas is the Canyon Fire. It is NW of Santa Clarita near the town of Piru. Winds are pushing it away from Piru and generally away from Santa Clarita right now. There looks to be some good natural fire breaks around it, but could do some damage in the short term. The towns of Hasley and Castaic are in its immediate path.

The Canyon fire started behind a shooting range in almost the same spot as a fire a few years ago. It is probably over 5,000 acres now. Structure protection is ongoing with a few thousand homes in the immediate area. So far, it looks like they've kept it out of the towns. They'll get a little help with moisture recovery tonight, but the damn thing ran like crazy this afternoon/evening.
