Old wive's tale is that if you count how many stars are visible inside the halo, then that's how many days until it rains. Really its just ice crystals from very high cirrus clouds. Often does mean that rain is just a few days away. (I was a weather observer in the military back in the day. They taught us that. haha)

I've always heard that's how big the moon would look if it were right at our atmosphere.
