Mitch Landrieu house arrest watch

Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s administration has filed emergency appeals with the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and the state Supreme Court in a last minute effort to keep the mayor from being put under house arrest this weekend for failing to resolve a back pay dispute with the city’s firefighters.
The appeals were filed early Friday afternoon, hours before Landrieu is required to go under house arrest at 5 p.m.
The city’s appeals attempt to overturn Civil District Court Judge Kern Reese’s order finding the city in contempt of court last week for failing, after a month of mediation, to come up with a plan to pay firefighters $75 million they are owed in back pay and another $67 million in interest. Reese gave Landrieu until today resolve the case, which began in 1979, or else find himself under house arrest every weekend from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday until an agreement is reached.

I don't envy the position Mitch is in - he's paying for the sins of past mayors.
But he has made one huge mistake that I think is turning opinion of the public and the courts against him.
He has decided to combine the longevity issue (what the current house arrest threat is over) and the pension issue into one issue, and wants to negotiate them as a group.
The pension issue is a giant mess, and it's well documented that the problems are from underfunding (city fault) and from mismanagement (pension plan fault) and both should share in the fix. Public pension plans are not popular in the public eye and politically he can take a hard line stance and have a lot of support.
But the longevity issue, everyone is on the side of the firemen. This is money they earned that they never got. It would be as if your boss just decided not to pay you some of your salary. Having to pay 75 million at once is impossible.
But... the city is about to get a BP settlement. Why not give the entire check towards the 75 million, and for the rest, base it off of increases in property tax collections as the tax base rises?

The Supreme Court stayed the house arrest ruling. Good on Mitch for not being intimidated though. I respect the guy for being willing to go through all this in order to save tax payers from a bad deal.

Because the BP settlement should not be used to pay off firefighters and their unions. It should be used to improve city infrastructure.
But, sadly, it'll probably go to fund this settlement and we will all get to bitch about the shitty city infrastructure for the next 50 years until another catastrophic event happens.

Every New Orleans citizen should send the pension fund a voided check.
Allow them to draft $1 from y'all's account for the next thousand weeks. $1,000/head.

That's what capital dollars are for.
We have bond money and FEMA money for infrastructure fixes, the city can't get their act together to spend it.

He has no intent of going through with it. He could have made a better point had he stayed on house arrest through the weekend in order to bring attention top the subject.
The deal on the other hand, it sucks, but the city made the deal.

If the Supreme Court hadn't stayed the order, he would be going through with it. He didn't know how they would respond. House arrest isn't that bad, but it would have been enough to cause a weaker and more selfish man to rush into a bad solution for the city.

Mitch is quickly becoming one of the loneliest politicians in Louisiana. His sister is irrelevant, Vitter is going to be elected governor. He has no friends in the NOPD, OPSO, NOFD, Jefferson parish hates him. I see him possibly running for a state rep or possibly US rep gig but he's done. Honestly he's not a bad guy, just put in bad situations and and terrible politician.
