Oh how I hated shelling those damn things when I was a kid.
Mamaw always made drop biscuits in the morning and cornbread for super and dinner. beans and peas for every meal. the only thing i wouldn't eat (voluntarily, because i still was made to eat it) that she grew or cooked was the okra.

Oh, how I hate purple hull peas. Washtubs full of those fricking things were my personal hell during the summers growing up. My grandparents grew up in the Depression, so huge gardens were a must and I was conveniently available for indentured servitude during the summers when it was time to harvest.
They bought me off with jars of canned figs and fig cakes, though. I was cheap.

Snap beans, purple hulls, greens, squash, zucchini...loved it all. I’d love to have a big garden again some day
