Question for you. I know a couple of guys that transferred over from the Marines that said they were in some high speed Marine anti-terrorism squad.

They said it was just a tour they were slotted for. They didn't sign up for it or go to a "Q" course or anything.

I met them separately and they both told me the same thing. Any idea what it is?

It’s not around anymore. But a good friend of my dad was a macv sog 1-0 in Vietnam. I’ve met a Seal and have a few friends who are apparently high up with Rangers. But the dude from Vietnam is the person I’d think could kill every person around and get away. He legit has ears hung on his man cave wall from bounty hunting in Rhodesia in the 70s.

Understand this, each of them have specific skills and mission types. If you think any of the training is not tough you are mistaken.
This could have been second entry under OP and there would be no need for a 3rd entry, let alone 7 pages.

Yeah it’s called FAST company. Fleet Anti-Terrorist Security Team. Basically a lot of Marine infantry get selected for Security Forces. These are the guys that guard the Navy’s nuclear assets and overseas bases. So those guys go to more training after infantry school. I guess while you’re in that training you can get selected for FAST company.

There’s one company on each coast with platoons toward deployed to the Middle East, Rota, and Japan. They get some pretty “high speed” training. A lot of fast roping and SWAT type tactics. Normally what they do is reinforce embassies or port areas where there is a heightened threat of terrorist attack.

Surprised no one has said SOG, the action guys inside of SAC. Think Jason Bourne but in the realm of reality.

Thanks guys for confirming everything I THINK I know about this subject.

I admit I only learned about the existence of SOG 6 months ago.

SOG doesn't exist any more I'm told.

I wouldn't know how to compare them to today's groups.

If you were Green Beret and ready to have a 50% chance of survival you could be in SOG.

Hey man, I can’t remember exactly, and I haven’t read through this entire thread so bear with me here. But I seem to remember in another thread a couple months ago that you believe that SOCOM is getting too big now, did you say that?

I think you said that you didn’t think the Department of the Navy needed SEALs and MARSOC and that the USMC really probably didn’t need MARSOC to begin with. Also that the Army has way too many special operations units.

Am I misremembering that? I could’ve swore you said that here.

FWIW: I agree with you, if you’re the one that said that. Especially considering the Department of the Navy.

Since where in the monthly military thread. Does anyone know if MARSOC actually does anything? I never hear anything about those dudes and I've never really seen them in my travels. Do they get missions?

They decided They didn't like unconventional warfare and ditched that role. As far As direct action missions, I wouldn't know except that they show up in medal citations from time to time, so they're apparently busy doing something.

They changed the name already? They just changed SAD to SAC. And SOC still exists, they just renamed it something else, the CIA didn't just get out of the hitman business.

Marine Recon are just as capable as those pretty boys and don’t need to write a book every time they take a shite

Marine Recon has a completely different mission. They do not have any of the underwater demolition and infiltration skills. So no, they aren’t “just as capable” because they have completely different capabilities.

I don’t remember exactly but sure. SOCOM is too big. Ridiculously big in fact. It’s so fricking big that they run around the world creating missions for themselves. Honestly most of what they do could easily be handled by a regular infantry unit.

SOCOM as a a command structure probably shouldn’t even exist but I’m against the idea of combatant commands in the first place. The SEAL missions should just be handed over to the Marines. Hell, at this point there’s basically ST6 that does anything of note and the other teams basically just exist to provide them support and act as a farm league. SF should probably be downsized by 50-75%.

Force Recon has that skill set. Face it bro. The SEALs exist solely so the Navy can be in the show and grab some headlines because we haven’t fought a naval battle in 75 years.

I don't claim to know much about this stuff. I learned about SOG as it existed in Vietnam. What I read lead me to believe it was disbanded after Vietnam.

We had 4 Air Force PJ’s in our barracks in Iceland. They might have been glorified medics but they were some bad-arse looking guys. One day I was plowing snow in a blizzard with white out conditions, visibility only about 30 feet,80mph winds.I see something coming at me ,looked like ghosts. It was 2 of those crazy mf’’s running into the wind.Chill factor was way below 0.Hell,I couldn’t even stand up in that wind,I had to crawl from the building to the snowplow.
