My buddy had to do get boarded. It sucked because he had 18 years in. When they first medically retired him, he was 90% in about a year, he was bumped to 100%.

I was very close to getting an MEB myself but barely avoided it. I did a 21 year retirement and am 90% so I get CRDP.

Yeah, that's about where my buddy was. The Army gave him 90% medical retirement but within months, the VA had him at 100% and he draws social security. He got injured in an IED rollover.

I am fortunate to make it to 21 years and avoid an MEB. Good luck.

I just finished my RILO and the people at AFPC non-concurred with the local doctor's recommendation of retaining me in the Air Force.

I'm now starting the MEB and VA process.

I want to stay in. Any tips?

I had mine during the RIF in 2011 when staying in was practically impossible. When you get to Lackland, you'll meet with your JAG who'll run through your case with you and will give you a pretty clear picture of what your chances are. They'll let you know what % disability they're going to go to the board with and if you choose, the case as to why you should be allowed to stay in.

I was young and dumb enough to not fight for 100% disability and the Board accepted my decision to take the % offered to me without ever having to go sit in front of them. At the time, I figured a check for life and tax-payer healthcare wasn't a bad deal. So, I can't speak for the actual board process.

One tip if the lawyer says it doesn't look good for staying in... They have a book which relates symptoms to a % disability. They literally use key words from your medical records and assign a %. Mine was pretty cut and dry due to my injuries but after I'd accepted and gone home, my VA rep couldn't believe I wasn't awarded 100%. Really wish I'd known that before I went in. Did get my 100% from the VA so at least my retirement money is tax free

RILO-Retirement in lieu of
AFPC-Air Force personnel Center
MEB- Medical evaluation board
VA-Everyone knows

MEB will prob take about a year. Your CCs recommendation letter is very important. TIS? HYT?

Tell the VA EVERYTHING that is wrong with you. Spare no details.

At worst you can make it to 20 through the appeal process.

Try to get to the 20 yr for the retirement. If you get severance, the VA will recoup that money eventually. So like another poster stated retirement > severance.

You can appeal and if you appeal in person you have a legit shot to stay in...

A lot of it depends on your Commander's rec, whether you are doing as many of the PT components as you can and your reports don't suck...

Good luck hombre
