Jeez man, that's rough. Was the vet having a 2 for 1 euthanasia special? How'd they reach time for death's door at the same time?
Based on their ages, they were probably both in very bad shape, and if they were pair bonded one being gone would push the other over the edge anyway.
I lost a pair of littermates a few weeks apart. Cancer is the devil.

How old is the dog? And how old is the child? A lot of it depends on the age of the child. Death is really not comprehensible to small children. It should not be a sneak move and you should explain it in an age-appropriate way.
Does it not have something to do with the kidneys? If the dog is old and you feel you have done everything you can for him, God bless you!

Hate this kind of situation.
I lost mine may 6 of last year and haven't been able to bring myself to get another.
Hope the best possible situation for you, and support when needed.

I didn't tell my children before hand. But when I picked them up that afternoon I said that he had gotten very sick and was in pain and that he went to sleep and never woke up. One child cried and the other didn't seem to understand. I cried too. Sadness is part of life and it's okay to express it. So sorry.

So sorry you're in this situation. It was exactly a year ago today that we had to put down our 7 yr old dachshund. He had diabetes, was blind in both eyes and had an inoperable tumor on his adrenal gland. Little guy was still in horrible pain even after massive doses of dilaudid, ultram and fentanyl around the clock. It was one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make and fortunately there were no little ones to have to try and explain it to. Hell, I had a hard enough time wrapping my own brain around it and even now, a year later, I still sometimes catch myself expecting to come home and see him looking out the window, tail wagging and so happy to see me. The vet told us "You'll know when it's time" and that sorta pissed me off at first bc I wanted..no..needed someone to make that decision for me bc of the "what ifs" that would..and did..come along with such a heartbreaking decision. In the end, we did know when it was time bc we were being selfish by keeping him here at his cost. He was suffering so that we wouldn't by losing him and it was unfair and cruel of us to continue that way.
My thoughts and prayers will be with y'all, though, no matter which way you go. Best of luck to you, your pup and your family.

Either way, before or after, just tell the kid the truth. I've had to 3 dogs die before my kid was 13, she was upset no matter what. But, she understood that the dog was in pain.

Sorry about your pup. Tell your kid beforehand so he can say goodbye. It's gonna be rough, but if he's peeing clots, that ain't good. Time will help. Hang in there.

Really sorry to hear about your situation. Not sure what to say about telling a 6 year old before doing it. We had our 15 year old dog put down at home a few weeks ago. Vet came to our house and it was very peaceful though just as hard especially being that the dog was mentally still good.
I have a 5 year old grandson that lives next door and was close to the dog. He knew she was getting sick and after it was done, we explained to him that she she was in a lot of pain and it was time for her to doggy heaven.
Not long ago his six month old lab died from poisoning. We buried her and he understood that she was buried. We buried our dog next to his and he seemed to understand.
Every kid that age will have a different understanding. Do what you think is best for your kids. You know them the best. Again, really sorry.
