I'm white and have been shaving with various types of razors almost all my life. I did try a couple of electric razors but found they didn't shave near as close or as thorough as a razor.
My go to razor is a Merkur double edge safety razor like your grandpa used back in the day. I've also shaved with straight razors for a few years and the multi-bladed razors of various makes and models.
I always go back to the regular safety razor. I will use a towel soaked in very hot water and placed over my face to soften the beard a bit before applying my shaving cream and that helps get a good close shave with little irritation.

Can't believe I've never heard of the safety razor before. Do you change the blade every shave with this razor?
I assume with this type of razor you have to use shaving cream? How much easier is it to cut yourself with this safety razor?
